Background of the Study

E-commerce has significantly influenced consumer behavior by offering convenience, variety, and competitive pricing. In Nigeria, platforms like Jumia and Konga have enabled consumers to shop online, bypassing the constraints of physical retail. This digital transformation has reshaped spending habits, with consumers increasingly adopting online purchasing patterns for goods ranging from groceries to electronics.

E-commerce impacts consumer spending habits by encouraging impulse purchases, enabling comparison shopping, and altering traditional budgeting practices (Eze, 2024). However, issues such as trust, delivery inefficiencies, and digital payment barriers persist. Understanding these dynamics provides critical insights into how e-commerce is shaping Nigeria’s consumer market.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the rapid growth of e-commerce in Nigeria, there is limited research on its influence on consumer spending habits. While e-commerce platforms offer convenience, they also drive changes in spending behaviors, such as increased reliance on credit facilities and reduced savings rates. Many consumers report difficulties managing expenditures due to easy access to online shopping platforms.

Existing studies often generalize global trends without addressing Nigeria's unique socioeconomic context, where digital literacy, income disparities, and infrastructural challenges influence consumer behavior (Adewuyi, 2025). This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the impact of e-commerce on Nigerian consumers' spending habits.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze how e-commerce influences consumer spending habits in Nigeria.
  2. To identify factors driving changes in consumer behavior due to e-commerce.
  3. To recommend strategies for promoting responsible consumer spending in the e-commerce sector.

Research Questions

  1. How does e-commerce influence consumer spending habits in Nigeria?
  2. What factors drive changes in consumer behavior in the e-commerce landscape?
  3. What strategies can promote responsible consumer spending in Nigeria's e-commerce sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. E-commerce significantly influences consumer spending habits in Nigeria.
  2. Factors such as convenience, pricing, and marketing drive changes in consumer behavior.
  3. Responsible spending strategies can mitigate the negative effects of e-commerce on consumer finances.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Nigerian consumers who actively use e-commerce platforms between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include potential bias in consumer self-reports and variations in e-commerce platform adoption across regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Consumer Spending Habits: Patterns of expenditure by individuals or households on goods and services.
  • Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and platforms.
